Proper court maintenance is an essential habit to keeping your courts in top playing condition. Whether you manage a private facility, a community park, school sports facilities, or properties, regular upkeep extends the life of your courts, elevates playability, and ensures safety for those who play on them. So, the question is, how often should you inspect, schedule, or perform maintenance on your courts? Let us at McConnell & Associates answer those questions for you.
Daily Court Maintenance & Inspections
- Debris Removal: Blow off leaves, dust, and other debris from the playing surface to prevent buildup.
- Net Check: Ensure tennis and pickleball nets are properly tensioned. The top of the center strap should be slightly above 36 inches and 42 inches at the posts. Do not over-tension the net; this will damage the posts.
Weekly Court Maintenance & Inspections
- Landscaping Control: Removing any vegetation encroaching on the courts. Overgrowth can lead to foundation problems as well as continued extensive work when cleaning the surface daily.
- Surface Inspection: Check for standing water, cracks, or any noticeable damage to the playing surface that could worsen over time.
Monthly Court Maintenance & Inspections
- Minor Repairs: Address cracks around ¼” in size or bigger before they expand. Contact McConnell & Associates to fill any cracks that have appeared on the playing surface. Using acrylic crack fillers will prevent them from being penetrated and compromised by the elements.
- Equipment Check: Inspect fences, gates, and lighting to ensure everything is in working order.
- Drainage Inspection: Perform an inspection of the court’s drainage system to ensure it is draining correctly. Making sure it is clear will prevent any water backup and reduce any chances of water damage.
Quarterly Court Maintenance & Inspections
- Pressure Washing: Giving the surface a gentle, deep cleaning with a mild detergent will remove any well-settled debris on the surface. Do Not Perform at too high a pressure, as you may damage the surface. Any pressure washing over 2,000psi will require use of a 25-40° tip
- Resurfacing Check: Perform a more in-depth and thorough inspection of the surface. Be vigilant for any surface fading, discoloration, or wearing-out spots.
Annual Court Maintenance & Inspections
- Cleaning: Wash the surface with a mild detergent to remove dirt and anything that may have settled on the playing surface.
- Resurfacing and Repainting: The Court typically needs resurfacing every 5-7 years, but annual touch-ups on high-use courts may be necessary.
- Major Repairs: Inspect and evaluate the need for significant repairs. Addressing any crack filling, or structural issues with the courts.
- Professional Inspection: McConnell & Associates’s ASBA certified staff can give you an accurate assessment and information on your next steps regarding your court’s needs.
