John Brown University was ready to stop chasing cracks and start investing in a tennis facility built to last. As a true MAC design-build project, we took the lead from the very beginning with survey work, design, and site plans. We then carried that momentum all the way through construction. Our pre-job planning and survey technology confirmed what the school had been battling for years: elevation and subsurface water issues that were shortening the life of the existing courts and driving repeat resurfacing costs.
We expanded the layout to meet USTA court requirements, dialed in the correct court grade for reliable drainage and fast-drying play, and rebuilt the facility from the ground up. Construction began with asphalt milling to establish the proper elevations, followed by grading and drainage improvements before installing (2) post-tensioned concrete slabs supporting (6) new courts. We finished with a complete court surfacing system, new fencing, and upgraded court amenities/equipment, then wrapped the project with site restoration, backfilling, and fine grading to enhance the spectator experience and protect the integrity of the facility for years to come. While MAC did not install the new lights, we coordinated closely with MUSCO and the electric company to ensure the team had the right information to deliver the school’s new MUSCO lighting system, helping the overall project come together seamlessly, supported in part by a USTA grant.
